Burger King stores were started by James Mc Lamore and David Edgerton. James Mc Lamore was impressed by the assembly line production system of original Mc Donald's restaurant, realizing the potential and benefits it offered he started his own venture which he named as Insta Burger King which modified into Burger King. Burger King was established in suburban Miami, Florida on December 4, 1954. James Mc Lamore and David Edgerton opted franchise model for their business as it reduced initial cost and increased profitability. 

Their revenue stands at $2.234 billion USD. Operating income is $290 million USD and their Net income is $148 million USD. Their ticker name on the browsers of NYSE is BKC. Burger King created a history when it’s IPO generated $425 million. It was the largest IPO of a US-based restaurant chain on record. Burger King announced plans of opening 180 Burger King stores in Africa, Middle East and Brazil. It is planning to open 250 stores in new Asian countries such as Macao and China by the end of 2012. It is concentrating on NIC (Newly industrialized countries) for expansion as their economy is booming. Burger King is second only to McDonald’s hamburger restaurants.

Mr. James Mc Lamore introduced the Whooper in 1957 and, since then, it has become a signature product of Burger King. The Whopper is made up of almost a pound of flame-broiled beef, tomatoes, crispy lettuce, mayo, ketchup, crunchy pickles and onions, all of which is piled onto a toasted sesame seed bun. Burger King has Whooper sandwiches, Flame-grilled burgers, chicken, fish, veggie, fresh baked baguettes, LA range, breakfast, deserts, sides and beverages in its menu. Special emphasis is placed on kids menu, broiled chicken tenders, apple “fries”, and organic apple. French cut apples are served in a fry box.

Burger King faced protests from PETA and, in response, changed its suppliers and started procuring raw materials for their ingredients from animals which are reared without cages. They voluntarily joined the council of better business bureaus children’s Food and Beverage Advertising initiative. It made changes to kid’s menu and provided food which has more nutritional value.

Burger King stores across the nation have participated in many charitable organizations, which focus on hunger alleviation, disease prevention and community education through scholarship programs at colleges in the United States. They have their own in house charitable organizations which provide scholarship programs to students. In local levels, they are affiliated with the Boston Red Sox Jimmy Fund, a charity that supports juvenile cancer research.
